Bisphenol A
Dear PPPC
Member,
The
upcoming decision by Health Canada to potentially list Bisphenol A as a
dangerous substance under CEPA Toxic guidelines could have economically
damaging affects on some suppliers and distributors in our industry.
Despite
ample scientific evidence that North American human exposure levels are
literally 100,000 times below Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) levels established
by various regulatory authorities, Health Canada looks as if they are ready to
become the first jurisdiction to take the unprecedented step of listing BPA as
a dangerous substance.
As an
industry we have a number of options about managing this issue. We can join
other organized and informed stakeholders who oppose this move or we can accept
this decision and take proactive steps to move forward with alternative
strategies. Each of these implies a variety of potential tactics.
Alternatively,
as an industry we can adopt no proactive stance and merely observe the process.
Because of the potential economic impact of this issue, we do not recommend the
latter alternative. BPA presents our industry with both a challenge and an
opportunity. In order to make an informed strategic decision on this issue, we
would like to discuss this collectively with distributors and suppliers who are
directly involved with plastic drink containers using BPA. We are about to
launch a national media tour in conjunction with TOPS. I want to ensure that
our position is reflective of the industry. To do that, we need to understand
the thinking of the experts on this issue –those of you who are on the front
lines in the marketplace.
To that
end, I would like to hear from you via email, (by replying to this email or to donald@pppc.ca) your thoughts and your
individual reactions to this issue and your intended strategies. Many of you
are interested in what others are doing about this issue and what the options
are. Is your plastic bottle business declining? Has it reached the point of no
return or is it worth fighting to save? Are there innovative strategies to grow
the business, to launch alternatives, to improve relations with government, to
leverage your company’s and the industry’s position for positive impact or other
possibilities? Please let us know so that we can share this information
collectively and protect individual confidentiality at the same time.
I look
forward to hearing from you as quickly as possible.
Sincerely,
Donald
O’Hara
